Civil war diary, 1865 Feb. 16-1865 July 14.

Diary dedicated to "beloved wife". Describes experiences. While in Springfield compares difference of Lincoln's "simple frame home" to ex-Governor Mattesson's mansion "a living evidence of the rascality" of one who "stole the money from the state to build the house". In New York visits Barnum's, the anatomical museum and the Universalist church to hear E.H. Chapin and describes all. Then describes experiences in hospitals and in May a two day storm while traveling "in a tub" on the Chesapeake Bay.

Doctor from Pike County Illinois mustered into the 7th Illinois Infantry, Company D on February 16, 1865 and went to New York then to hospitals in Goldsboro, and Beaufort, North Carolina. Mustered out July 14, 1865. His son Herbert served in France in WWI and his son Grant, a lawyer who worked for the Dawes Commission and wrote several books on historical topics especially American Indians.
